Dark Tide May Be The Frontrunner For The Most Unintentionally Hilarious Movie Of The Year

Let me preface this by saying that I love Halle Berry. Evidence suggests she may be batshit insane, but I’ve yet to witness any of this for myself, so I’m gonna give her the benefit of the doubt. And while a lot of people still question her as an actress, I still think she’s got more than a few impressive points on her filmography, Monster’s Ball included. But I’ll be good goddamned if I’m gonna take this new movie seriously!!!! Continue Reading »Dark Tide May Be The Frontrunner For The Most Unintentionally Hilarious Movie Of The Year

1987 . . . And Shane Black

Chatting with some friends last night made me want to revisit one of my old MySpace blogs, as one of them admitted to me that she had never seen Monster Squad?!?! And all this time, we thought her geek cred was legit! In any event, there was a time about four years ago when I realized that 1987 was a pretty monumental year for movies, at least for me, anyway. Some of my favorite movies came out then. I’m betting a good number of the following are your favorites, too. Continue Reading »1987 . . . And Shane Black

At Least It’s Not Twilight (Or “My Spoiler-Heavy Review Of Underworld: Awekening”)

Again, I say:

***************************MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!**************************

Returning to the franchise after 2009′s surprisingly effective prequel, Rise of the Lyans, Kate Beckinsale once again plays vampire death dealer (why no one ever asked her what the street value for death is, I’ll never know!) Selene, who gets capture by Antigen Industries, during the Great Purge, where humans, now aware of the existence of vampires and lycans, storm through every major city, killing the creatures en mass. Shizzie – “I Said No” Music Video

Things up-and-coming rappers need to stop doing in 2012:

1) That “dumbbell curl” dance, meant to showcase one’s flashy watch(es).

2) Renting a sports car from Eastern Motors and parkin’ it in da hood! At least park it out in front of a club that’s been closed down ’cause of a shooting the weekend before!

What they SHOULD be focused on:

1) Learning how to rap!

Have I Missed My Window To Talk Smack About Lana Del Rey?!

Yes? Well screw you, ’cause this is my blog! In any event, I had been hearing about this young lady for the last few months, and I found myself happily not giving a rat’s ass. I gazed upon the Instagram’ed image of this smarmy, fish-lipped, doe-eyed blond, with a crown of roses adorning her melon, then promptly returned to my life. Then I remembered that I do occasionally cover music in my off-time, and reluctantly gave LDR a listen. Continue Reading »Have I Missed My Window To Talk Smack About Lana Del Rey?!

Kayode’s Television Report Card Pt. 1: The Networks

Admittedly, I don’t watch television nearly as much as I used to. At least not when shows regularly air, anyway! Honestly, it is usually a situation where life DOES get in the way! Even shows I follow religiously have fallen victim to just being background noise while I edit podcasts for Popcultureshock (which can remarkably time-consuming!). Sometimes, I’m just working late at the day job. Sometimes, I’m just outta the country. You know, typical stuff. But I know I’ve watched enough since last fall to share with you my thoughts. The Bleeding: When The Only Thing Scary About A Horror Film Is Its Very Existence

Admittedly, I’ve been known to like (if not love) my fair share of bad horror films. The right bad horror film can be a deeply engrossing and worthwhile viewing experience, depending on a number of factors; watching it with like-minded individuals, watching it on SyFy, watching it under the influence of pharmaceuticals that have yet to be approved by the FDA, etc., etc., etc. And I’d say my tolerance is pretty high for most bad horror films. But as a fan of vampire films as well, and needing them to be genuinely good more often than not, there’s a very thin line between what I’ll tolerate in a bad vampire film, and what will throw me into a table-flipping baby-eating, “bitch, I’m outta donuts” frenzy! Tyler Perry as Literary Detective Alex Cross, And The Reactions Of Overly Sensitive Black Folk

I’ve long since resigned myself to the fact despite myself being a black man, I don’t understand black people. I know this sounds like a very broad generalization, but I don’t give a rat’s ass. When it comes to certain topics, I just feel like I will always be the odd man out. Maybe it’s just in my nature to be the dissenter. Maybe I haven’t had enough of what some people would consider “The Black Experience”, and believe me, I get a lot of jokes from friends where the ultimate punchline is, “You ain’t black! You don’t count!”. And quite frankly, it genuinely pisses me off. I may not say it, and that’s my own fault, but it is something that I’m really fucking tired of hearing. In any event, if there’s one topic that continues to polarize people, especially black people, it’s Tyler Perry. And there are a number of people now in an uproar over news that he’s been cast as Dr. Alex Cross from James Patterson’s crime novel series.
